Powers of Ten

This is a film suggested by Andy. And it is do make effect. I understand the way to develop my work.

Powers of Ten is a 1977 short documentary film written and directed by Charles Eames and his wife, Ray. The film depicts the relative scale of the Universe in factors of ten.

The film begins with an aerial image of a man reclining on a blanket; the view is that of one meter across. The viewpoint, accompanied by expository voice over by Philip Morrison, then slowly zooms out to a view ten meters across ( or 101 m in standard form), revealing that the man is picnicking in a park with a female companion. The zoom-out continues, to a view of 100 meters (10² m), then 1 kilometre (10³ m), and so on, increasing the perspective—the picnic is revealed to be taking place near Soldier Field on Chicago's lakefront—and continuing to zoom out to a field of view of 1024 meters, or the size of the observable universe. The camera then zooms back in to the picnic, and then to views of negative powers of ten—10-1 m (10 centimeters), and so forth, until we are viewing a carbon nucleus inside the man's hand at a range of 10-18 meter.

Today, cynthia beth rubin did her lecture. I do influenced a lot. The animation 'français' is my favorite one which you can see on her website. Maybe animation is the language i am more keen on and can feel much more in common.

When she showed her work piece by piece. I can feel the progress she had passed. That is really a value experience. Computer & photoshop for her is the pen to draw her painting and won't limit her creativity.

When my studied computer design in China. Photoshop for me is only the technical tools. I never thought the work did by photoshop can be an art work. Beacuse that is only a tool to me. However, when i listen to her lecture, i saw her work and the progress of doing one piece of work. I really expressed her way of doing the work. She put many her ideas into her work, then the image become very sepcific one only can made by her.

I think maybe that is the difference between BA and MA. Art for the artist is something will follow all of our life.

I did the tutrial for Unit 3 with Andy. This tutrial is really helpful. He suggested to keep what i already have and develop more details. Andy also mentioned a film '10 * 10', which shows 10 times zoom in and 10 times zoom out.

I got the clue to develop my work. and i feel that is can be very interesting.

HA Schult, the famous action artist, first exhibited them in Germany in 1996. The figures caused such a positive response that he decided to take them on tour : La Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris and Moscow’s Red Square in 1999, the Great Wall of China in 2001, the Giza Pyramids in 2002, Switzerland’s Matterhorn in 2003.

The e-waste man mountain

A three-tonne humanoid figure made out of electronic waste is being unveiled on London’s South Bank.

include: (1) PC screens; (2) printers; (3) industrial lights; (4)
satellite dishes; (5) computer mice; (6) toasters; (7) vacuum cleaners;
(8) heaters; (9) washing machines; (10) microwaves

The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) has built the sculpture, which weighs three tonnes and stands seven metres tall.

It is made up of the average quantity of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) an individual disposes of in a lifetime, including five fridges, 12 kettles and 35 mobile phones. It is being displayed outside City Hall on London’s South Bank for 28 days before touring other parts of the country, including the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Electronic Waste

Guiyu is the largest electronic waste (e-waste) site on earth, and was first documented fully in December 2001 by the Basel Action Network in their report and documentary film entitled Exporting Harm . The health and environmental issues exposed by this report and subsequent scientific studies have greatly concerned international organisations such as the Basel Action Network and later Greenpeace and the United Nations Environment Programme and the Basel Convention.

A great many of the primitive recycling operations in Guiyu are toxic and dangerous to workers' health. These include operations by the many thousands of workers who cook circuit boards to remove chips and solders, burn wires and other plastics to liberate metals such as copper, use highly corrosive and dangerous acid baths along the riverbanks to extract gold from the microchips, and sweep printer toner out of cartridges. Children are exposed to the dioxin-laden ash. The soil has been saturated with lead, chromium, tin, and other heavy metals. The water is undrinkable and must be trucked in from villages farther out. Lead levels in the river sediment are double European safety levels, according to the Basel Action Network. [3] Piles of ash and plastic waste sit on the ground beside rice paddies and dikes holding in the Lianjiang river.

Noxious chemicals and metals, such as lead, are released when the used electronics are dunked into pits of acid and heated over coal-fueled grills. Researchers at the Hong Kong Baptist University previously demonstrated in March that the soil at these recycling centers possessed the highest concentrations of dioxin and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), a commonly used flame retardant linked to abnormal thyroid metabolism and brain development. Another study showed that workers' blood levels at the sites contained levels of heavy PBDE-BDE–209 50 to 200 times higher than the norm.

These results are "not surprising," said Oladele Ogunseitan, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, who added: "The significance of the paper is to provide us with the first estimate of what [levels] to expect. As a next step, what needs to be done is as an epidemiological study looking for actual symptoms, but I imagine that this is not a trivial thing to do."

"I've always advocated that the U.S. must now take very seriously the Basel Convention that prohibits the shipment of hazardous wastes to other countries. We are, in principle, a country that will do this kind of thing on purpose. But by our inaction on international laws that protect vulnerable populations all over the world, we are essentially saying that it's OK," he explained, stating that the U.S. in particular bears much of the blame since it exports approximately 50-80% of its e-waste to China.

In 2007, conditions in Guiyu have changed little despite the efforts of the central government to crack down and enforce the long-standing e-waste import ban.[citation needed] Visitors to the city still experience headaches and strange metallic tastes in the mouth. Recent studies have revealed some of the highest levels of dioxin ever recorded.

Running the Numbers
An American Self-Portrait

This series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 410,000 paper cups used every fifteen minutes. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. The underlying desire is to emphasize the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming.

My only caveat about this series is that the prints must be seen in person to be experienced the way they are intended. As with any large artwork, their scale carries a vital part of their substance which is lost in these little web images. Hopefully the JPEGs displayed here might be enough to arouse your curiosity to attend an exhibition, or to arrange one if you are in a position to do so. The series is a work in progress, and new images will be posted as they are completed, so please stay tuned.

Chris Jordan Creates Beauty from E-Waste

Digital artist Chris Jordan knows how to turn e-trash into photographic treasure. His large-scale images of massive amounts of statistically-inspired refuse make it all too clear just how big a problem consumer waste is. His work, which features objects from Barbies and plastic bags to e-waste and shipping containers, brings to light a tough dichotomy, presenting our gluttonous existence as consumers in a beautiful medium.

In his most recent exhibition, Running the Numbers, Jordan looks at contemporary American culture through “the austere lens of statistics.” Each image notes a staggering statistic, and portrays a large quantity of something (i.e. 426,000 cell phones, equal to the number of cell phones retired in the US every day). The image makes the statistic real, almost impressionistic in style, as it appears simple or monotone from afar but detailed up close (see the zoomed images of batteries and cell phones below). “The underlying desire is to emphasize the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming,” he says.

Cell Phones- Depicts 426,000 cell phones, equal to the number of cell phones retired in the US every day.

Energizer- Depicts 170,000 disposable Energizer batteries, equal to fifteen minutes of Energizer battery production.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — It’s no wonder Americans are heavily invested in a culture of consumption. As targets of ubiquitous corporate branding campaigns and marketing mania, we are bombarded 24/7 on all fronts – through every conceivable form of mass media and product packaging, at sporting and entertainment venues, and even lobbied by the apparel of friends and family.

The unified message conveyed by each of these delivery systems: Buy! Buy! Buy!

But not everyone is passively buying what’s being sold.

“Ours is a culture defined by marketing and acquiring,” Fox and Duggan observe in text from the catalog that accompanies the exhibition. “With one of our founding fathers – Thomas Jefferson – a compulsive shopper, this just may be part of being American. Virtually every activity in our lives is experienced through purchases, from bassinets to caskets. The landscape is studded with logos, brand names, and billboards – inducements to participate in a culture defined by the acquisition of commodities.

After i chose the topic about Utopia &Consumer Age, i looked plenty of stuff related this topic. I was thinking about real,unreal, alter ego, second life...etc. However, i always have the problem to build up the project. The word like 'real/unreal', second life, illusion ... are too abstract for me. I don't know how to build my project from those worlds, so i was looking many information of those worlds. Then i start to more confuse.

However, PT 1& FT presentation gave me lots of help. I understand how they build up their project and how to research the project. I was thinking about my project based on my own experience before. But my experience is not too strong to support my project. Based on static and research report will be more strong. That is also the way i feel more comfortable to do the project.

"All of these artists reference the other kinds of images we are familiar with," writes Katy Siegel in her essay for the Art:21 Companion Book. "We spend our whole lives training to understand movies and television and video games and clothes and beds and houses. And so contemporary art often invokes these experiences and objects; art often looks like a commodity, because in a consumer culture, nothing could be more essential."

“Consumption” begins with an original work created by artist Barbara Kruger. Hosted by tennis star and sports commentator John McEnroe, the humorously frenetic video explores the ways in which people consume things in their daily lives, from food to money to sex. Throughout the video, Kruger's trademark phrases in red and white demand the attention and obedience of the viewer. Proclaiming "Love art, Buy art, Sell art," and "Feed me, Love me, Buy me, Sell me", Kruger's text addresses the viewer in much the same way advertisers sway a consumer to buy a product.

Saya Woolfalk: No Place: Wonders from that World

Inspired by a year in Brazil, Saya Woolfalk's new work is a deceptively cute, motley investigation of otherness. The exhibition's title references Renaissance philosopher Sir Thomas More's Utopia, but Woolfalk's interpretation of "no place" is a postcolonial Candy Land populated with fuzzily fleeced and tropical calico-print creatures. Alongside this installation, a single-channel video features two brightly clad dancers in a bizarre, ritualistic duet to what sounds like a bossa nova-spiked Nintendo tune. Her works on paper, particularly the Seven Wonders series, are dreamy, symbol-laden landscapes that imagine an eroticized alternate world of fertility temples and colossal banana-draped monuments, set against backdrops of rainbows and puffy clouds.

Ethnography of No Place is a series of collaborative works that document an imaginary world. Constructed from household materials (fabrics, sounds, gestures), the characters and stories evoke travel narratives, science fiction, and academic anthropology to rework tropes of sexuality, gender, and race. The name No Place is derived from the English word, “utopia,” coined by Thomas More from the Greek “no” (ou) and “place” (topos)--literally, no place.

Chapter 1: Self and Landscape. This video re-imagines desire and reproduction through the documentation of an Eden-like environment. The Self and the Landscape collapse into one another and negotiate forms of activity and passivity through their sensual interaction. Self and Landscape premiered at Artists Space Gallery, New York, NY in May 2007.

Chapter 2: Death and Kin. In this video, the Self has aged and reached the end of her life. In gestures evoking the Butoh performance of Kazuo Ohno, she constructs her own tombstone and her relatives mourn her passing. The sentiment of loss breaks down the linearity of time, until finally the body transforms into landscape once again.

Chapter 3: Portal. The beings of No Place use the detritus of our world to construct a portal that would give us access to theirs if only we could imagine how to use it.

Now i got the idea of certification.

More and more people are enage on getting certification(such as certification from famous universiy). The symbol of 'certification' become more important than the real meaning. 'Good Certification'= 'ability of person'. Everyone knows that just is a symbol, however everyone follow the rule of game...

So what comes out,

Something looks exist but still unreal.

In the morden life, everything goes fast. Many people already chose one kind of heterotopia even they may not realized. Foucault metioned the heterotopia can be a real place. I thought this place maybe a unreal reality place.

Consumption Utopia in Contemporary Society

Aim:
My aim is to explore what will happen after consumption utopia. Talking about spirit crisis and the bailment of the spirit.Exploring different utopia worlds which from different group of people and find out something in common.

Objectives:
Find out why some people become more indulge in food, interenet,shopping, computer games etn.
Image the how Chinese personal valuation changed after 1990.

a major definition of heterotopia; is its medical meaning. It's the removal of one part or organ from the body and affixing it at another place in or on the body. That's called a heterotopia. A skin graft is a heterotopia. But so is a sex change—one of the meanings of the word.

1w5 Consumption Utopia and New Chinese Literature

In the 1990's, everything in China was changing at such a high speed that young Chinese writers did not have enough time to understand deeply the relationship between Chinese personal valuation and material life.

"Literature can make life better, like the function of art. Both of them save us from boredom and emptiness.

"the challenge of writing is: to find new ways of expressing and describing the relations between people and reality."

The Asian "candy generation" are busy buying apartments and shopping, they enthusiastically respond too installment plans and long for becoming a part of the mainstream of life. The purpose of novels by Hu Fang is not to research them, but to image them. Hu Fang, along with other young Chinese writers, hope to express their own voice. Not to agree with, but think deeply about the transformation of Chinese modern life.

"Utopia" has been a symbol of revolution and idealism in a certain Chinese historical period, but what does it mean now? Just as Zheng Guogu said: "consuming is ideal; consuming is piquant."

Whose Utopia

Cao Fei: Whose Utopia, the first of these projects, presents the work of Cao, an artist born in Guangzhou, Guangdong, who addresses the complexities of the rapidly shifting contemporary moment. The artist spent six months at the OSRAM China Lighting Ltd., a factory in the Pearl River Delta in China, a major manufacturing base for everyday products for Chinese and foreign markets that has drawn workers from throughout China in search of economic opportunities and a better life. The installation is anchored by a video, Whose Utopia, and includes the everyday personal mementos and metal bunk beds present in the workers dormitories. The video is an eerily beautiful portrait of the factory and of the workers’ daily lives, fantasies, and aspirations. Scenes from the flow of the regular workday are interspersed with performances by a peacock dancer, a ballerina dressed as an angel, an electric guitar player, and a break dancer.

CCA Kitakyushu presents Cao Fei's "Whose Utopia."

"Whose Utopia" is a 20 minutes video work, made during Cao's participation to Siemens arts program. For the project Cao stayed for 6 months at OSRAM China Lighting Ltd., Foshan. The area where the factory is located is called Pearl River Delta Region, and has been drastically changed as one of the strongholds of Chinese economic activities which have shown a remarkable growth. The factory is one of the factors for the growth and change, and the people, especially the young generation, come from many parts of the country to work there for their better life. "Whose Utopia," focusing on the employees who perceive the country's drastic change as their opportunities and involve with the expansion, traces their life and dream they hold. It shows the reality of their workplace and social environment in the country which is more strongly marching than ever towards the modernization, contrasted with the dreamlike poetic scenes that are presented by the employees.

1w4 Eden-- Life and death in the artificial ecosystem

eden is an interactive, self-generating, artificial ecosystem. A cellular world is populated by collections of evolving virtual creatures. Creatures move about the environment, making and listening to sounds, foraging for food, encountering predators and possibly mating with each other. Over time, creatures evolve to fit their landscape. eden has four seasons per year and each year lasts 600 eden days. One eden year passes by in about fifteen minutes of real time. A simple physics dictates only three basic types of matter in the Eden world: rocks, biomass and sonic animals. You can get more details about eden (including photos, sounds and video) in the book Impossible Nature: the art of Jon McCormack. The book also includes a DVD with video documentation of eden exhibited at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in 2004.
eden was inspired by time spent in the wilderness of Litchfield National Park, Northern Territory, Australia.

eden’s creatures begin life with little knowledge. Over time, they change, learning to adapt to their environment. Evolution of behaviour leading to mating usually takes about five eden years to discover. Behaviours that are more complex emerge between seven and seventy-five eden years and beyond. Many creatures die during this time. If a creature can mate before it dies, it passes on its genetic material to its offspring, who inherit the capabilities of their parents (as behaviour learnt during a parent’s lifetime is passed to its offspring: eden uses Lamarckian evolution).

The creatures can see (at short distances) and hear. The sounds you hear while eden is running are the sounds the creatures make. They can recognise the tonal ‘colour’ of the sound they hear and identify its direction. Through evolution, the creatures learn to make sounds and to hear the sounds of others. The work generates a sonic landscape that is experienced by people within the installation space while eden is evolving.

Sound is only made by a creature if it improves survival.

For example, in some evolutions of eden, creatures use sound to help them mate or find food. In other evolutions, they use sound to keep people within the physical space of the installation. This is achieved by placing sensors around the installation that detect human movement. Their movement and presence is mapped to the food supply for the creatures. If there are no people, the food supply dries up and the creatures starve to death. By making ‘interesting’ sounds, the creatures can keep people in the installation space, thereby increasing their food supply. On some occasions the creatures have learnt to use sound to keep people within the space, hence increasing their chances of survival. A symbiotic relationship develops between eden’s audience and its artificial life.

eden could be considered an artificial life world that uses sound, or a generative composing system for experimental sound and image. One of the aims of the work is to exploit the emergent properties that result from the relationship between the people who experience the work and the open-ended nature of artificial evolution.

If this acid were extracted and refined it may be converted into electricity when combined with zinc and copper acting as anode and cathode.
